| | MONTHLY THEMES
Each month, the Dojo celebrates "monthly themes" to encourage students to stretch far beyond their comfort zones and to reach for goals that help perfect their characer...both as a martial artisit and human being in general.
Please take note of the Dojo's upcoming "monthly themes" for the '08 - '09 season:
September - "Change the World Month". Students learn about how their committment to the Martial Arts has helped provide food, shelter and education to children in Nepal and beyond. During the week of September 27th - 30th, students discuss ideas and actions that they can implement to help "Change the World!".
October - "Travel the World Month". During the month of October, students learn about the roots and traditions of many martal arts and their place of origins including Japan, Okinawan Islands, China and the Phillipeans. Special Seminars including Filipino Martial Arts, Kung Fu, & Qi Gong are offered to celebrate the world of the martial arts!
November - "Bully Awareness Month". During the week of November 22nd - 27th, students partake in a Bully Awareness and Prevention Workshop. The Bully Free Team (a group of elected students whose main responsibility is to help monitor and limiit bullying in their schools and beyond) is selected. The message for a Bully Free / B-FREE world is Compassion. |
| December - "Pennies for Push Ups Month". Students collect "pennies" from family members and friends in relation to how many push ups they can do. The donated monies are given to a charity of choice by the students. Collection Drive begins December 1st - 10th. Push Ups to be completed by students will occur the week of December 13th - 15th.
January - " Health Month". Students discuss with guest speakers the importance of physical, mental and emotional health and engage in various group activites that encourage health and well-being. Week of January 19th - 24th.
Feburary - " Act of Kindness Month". During the week of 9th - 14th, students create a list of "kind acts" and are encouraged to complete these "acts of kindness" and then to pass the "kindness" on...
March - "Let the Games Begin Month". To prepare students for the Dojo's upcoming Open Martial Arts Tournament in April (Alberta Bushido Open), students partake in various activites that encourage healthy compeition and athleticism. March 1 - March 31st.
April - The Alberta Bushido Open Month". To continue the preparation for the Dojo's annual tournament (April 11th), students learn about proper "sportshumanship", tournament etiquette and mental preparation and focus for success. | |
| | May - "Earth Month". During the week of May 4th - 9th, students partake in their annual community clean up in Sylvan Lake and Rimbey.
June - "Power Up! Month". Students partake in the Dojo's 3rd Annual Strength Competition! Kettlebells, Cardio Circuits, Balance, Agility and much more lie ahead for students to test thier own personal best! Week of June 15th - 20th.
July - "Summer Fun Month". From July 1st - 18th, students partake in many outdoor karate activites and drills to keep their motivation and dedication at its peak during the warm summer months. Weather permitted. |
| KARATE DATE NIGHTS
Karate Date Night is an exciting night of different yet fun karate drills, crafts and games, Karate and Kung Fu movie watching, with lots of popcorn, pizza and sushi for everyone to enjoy! Karate Date Nights are held each month on a Friday evening from 6 - 8 pm. It's a great opportunity for parents to drop off their kids and enjoy a "date night" of their own. Siblings and Friends are also welcome to attend. Take a look at some of the exciting Karate Date Nights to come!
October 29th - "Karate Fright Night". Enjoy a "scary night" of Karate Drills, Lantern Making, and a Haunted House! 50's Theme & Dance! Sylvan Lake Dojo, 6 - 8 pm. RSVP by October 27th.
November 19th - "Night of the Ninjas!" - Enjoy a mysterious night of Ninja Training, Ninja Custome Making, and Ninja Movies! Rimbey Dojo, 6 - 8 pm. RSVP by November 18th.
December 11th - " Karate Christmas Craft Night!" - Enjoy an evening of Christmas Craft Making and a special Karate Class with Santa Claus! Sylvan Lake (Honbu) Dojo, 6 - 8 pm. RSVP December 8th.
February 13th - "Karate Date Night" - Chinese New Year Theme! Learn about and celebrate various Chinese New Year Festivites. Participate in Dragon Dances. Rimbey Dojo, 6 - 8 pm. RSVP by February 9th.
March 20th - Lua Party! Keep warm during the cold winter months with a fun Karate Date Night in the "sun"! Participate in a Hula Dance competition, beach relay races, and other Hawaiian games. Sylvan Lake (Honbu) Dojo. 6 - 8 pm. RSVP by March 15th.
May 29th - Karate Beach Night! Join us for a fun night at the Sylvan Lake Beach for Beach Volleyball, Ninja Water Balloon Attacks, Relay Races, Pickled-Egg Eating Contest and Much More! Sylvan Lake Beach, 6 - 8 pm, RSVP by May 20th.
June 19th - "Karate Camp Night!" - Enjoy an imaginary camp night in the Dojo with spooky stories and camp fire games! Bring your sleeping bag! Rimbey Dojo, 6 - 8 pm. RSVP June 15th.

Please make note of the following special events and holidays for the September 2010 to December 2010 season (no regular classes will be held on on these days)...
"Intuitive Living: Self Defense for Women" © Workshops - Saturday mornings from 9 am - 12 pm. Check the "self defense for women" header for more details.
Run for a Better World: 2.5 km walk or 5 km / 10 km run. Sat. Oct. 2nd 10 am, Leader's Field, Sylvan Lake. This is the Dojo's annual fundraising run; this year's proceeds go to "A Better World" Organization. For athletes, families, children and anyone else looking to create positive change.
Women's Wellness Retreat: Sat. Oct. 16th, Sylvan Lake.
Grading - Fri. Oct. 22nd, 5:30 pm, Honbu Dojo.
Japanese Tea Cermony & Intro to Japanese - Sat. Oct. 23rd and Sat. Oct. 30th, time TBA.
Thanksgiving Celebrations - Dojo rests from Mon. Oct. 11th - no classes.
Kung Fu & Tai Chi Seminar- Sifu Bob Kho joins us from Teck Guan Studio in Calgary, to share with us the secrets of Kung Fu & Tai Chi for self defense and health. Date / Time TBA.
Parent Open House - Nov. 17th & 18th. Watch your children thrive in the Dojo. Come and watch their regular scheduled class!
Remembrance Day: Wed. Nov. 11th. Dojo "remembers"; no classes.
Grading & Christmas Dojo Potluck Party - Sat. Dec. 4th. Time TBA.
Christmas Karate Date Night: Sat. Dec. 11th. Pajama Craft Night. Karate Training with Santa!
